Mesh-restorable networks with complete dual failure restorability and with selectively enhanced dual-failure restorability properties

چکیده
We consider extensions of the most common mesh-restorable network capacity design formulation that enhance the dual-failure restorability of the designs. A significant finding is that while design for complete dual-failure restorability can require triple the spare capacity, dual failure restorability can be provided for a fairly large set of priority paths with little or no more spare capacity than required for single-failure restorability. As a reference case we first study the capacity needs under complete dual-failure restorability. This shows extremely high capacity penalties to support 100% dual-failure restorability. A second design model allows a user to specify a total capacity budget limit and obtain the highest average dual-failure restorability possible for that investment limit. This formulation can also be used to traceout the capacity-versus-availability trade-off curve for a mesh network. A third design strategy supports multiplerestorability service class definitions at minimum total cost. Restorability can range from best-efforts-only on any failure to an assurance of complete single and dual-failure restorability, on a per-demand basis. Prior work has only considered multiple service classes ranging from assured single-failure restorability and downwards in quality. This work shows how to economically support an added service class in the upward quality direction: assured dual failure survivability. This lets a network operator tailor the investment in capacity to provide ultra-high availability on a selective basis, while avoiding the very high investment required for complete dual-failure restorability for all.

Availability analysis of span-restorable mesh networks
The most common aim in designing a survivable network is to achieve restorability against all single span failures, with a minimal investment in spare capacity. This leaves dual-failure situations as the main factor to consider in quantifying how the availability of services benefit from the investment in restorability. We approach the question in part with a theoretical framework and in part w...
متن کاملMaintenance-immune Design of Span-restorable Mesh Networks
In contemplating mesh-based networking, some operators have expressed concern about the possible effects of span maintenance actions on network restorability, and hence availability. We consider this problem for span-restorable networks and provide two main advances. One is a bi-criteria optimization method that allows a controlled trade-off between the cost of spare capacity and the reduction ...
متن کاملComputational and Design Studies on the Unavailability of Mesh-restorable Networks
This paper studies the unavailability of mesh-restorable networks from the standpoint of dual-span failures as the main source of outage in networks that are efficiently designed to fully restore any single failure. Computer emulation of the detailed routing behavior of three progressively more adaptive restoration protocols is used to find the dual-failure restorability (R2) under modular and ...
متن کاملImpact of Resource Sharability on Dual Failure Restorability in Optical Mesh Networks
Protection capacity re-provisioning mitigates the impact of double-link failures by provisioning new capacity for unprotected demands in a network designed to achieve 100% restorability under singlelink failures. We study the performance of re-provisioning in networks under various resource sharing degrees. Intuitively, the lower is the sharability degree of resources the smaller is the number ...
متن کاملThe tradeoff between the number of deployed p-cycles and the survivability to dual fiber duct failures
p-Cycles can attain high capacity efficiency and fast protection switching times in WDM networks. The number of deployed p-cycles and the ability to survive dual fiber duct failures are further important characteristics which are considered in a pan-European network case study. We show that the dual failure restorability and the protection capacity can vary significantly for cycle-configuration...
